Preventing a Repeat Stroke
Wednesday August 23, 2006
Unfortunately having had a stroke puts you at risk for another. Of the 700,000 strokes that occur each year in the United States, almost 30 percent of them are repeat strokes. You have a 25-40% chance of having another stroke in the next 5 years if you have already had a stroke or you have had a transient ischemic attack (mini stroke). A repeat stroke nearly doubles the risk of death within two years.
If you have had a stroke what does it mean for you? It means that in addition to attending to the health care needs related to your stroke, you need to work closely with your doctor and health care team on your stroke prevention plan.
You can reduce your risk of a repeat stroke by reducing your risk factors. The risk factors that contributed to your first stroke should most likely be your main priority.
