UK Issues National Protocol for Stroke Emergency Care

Wednesday December 6, 2006
In the United Kingdom, the national Pre-hospital Stroke Guidelines Group has issued new guidelines and protocols for the emergency care of patients having or suspected of having a stroke or TIA.

Citing evidence that stroke victims who receive prompt emergency intervention have better outcomes, the guidelines cover these areas:
  • recognition of stroke and TIA symptoms;
  • pre-hospital management of stroke;
  • brain imaging;
  • arrival at hospital;
  • the provision of information and support for patients and their families;
  • investigation and management of patients with suspected TIA.
