A High Five to Morgan Fairchild
Morgan Fairchild knows stroke like the back of her hand. She served as the caregiver to her mother, who suffered a series of debilitating strokes until her death in the late 1990s. Her experiences as a family member and caregiver of a stroke survivor now serve as a powerful impetus that drives her enthusiastic public awareness campaign against stroke.
Fairchild reminds us with her "Give Me 5 For Stroke" campaign that we should never hesitate to call 911 when we suspect a stroke. Her campaign gives people the tools to find out whether a person's symptoms could be those of a stroke. Her catchphrase is: "Give me 5: walk, talk, see, reach, feel". Walk=check for balance and call 911 if balance is off. Talk: check for slurred speech or droopy face and call 911 if you find it. Reach: if one side is weak or numb you must call the ambulance. See: if there is a change in vision, even if it is partial, don't wait any longer and call 911. Feel: does the person have a headache which is different, or worse than any other they have ever had? If so, call 911!
Clearly Fairchild understands that when it comes to stroke time is brain. A high five to her for her efforts. Pass this information along to as many people as you can. It might save the brain of someone you know some day.
