Proven Once Again: Living Healthy Does Prevent Stroke

Friday September 19, 2008

You hear it over and over again from you doctors: "a healthy lifestyle prevents strokes". But where is the evidence for this? There is actually reasonable evidence, but it is good to know that the scientific establishment keeps on checking that what they are saying to patients actually has been proven.

The most recent evidence in defense of a healthy lifestyle for the prevention of stroke comes from a study in which 43,685 men and 71,243 women self-reported their diet and other lifestyle factors. The authors evaluated stroke risk based on smoking, body mass index (BMI), degree of daily activity, degree of alcohol consumption and diet. Their findings show that a non-smoking status, BMI of less than 25, moderate alcohol consumption and exercise are strongly associated with a reduced stroke risk, especially ischemic stroke.
