The Brain Attack Coalition (BAC) consists of a group of entities that work together to reduce the number of strokes, and their associated disabilities, in the United States. They also generate the guidelines used by hospitals, large and small, for the treatment of acute and chronic strokes.
To accomplish this, the BAC disseminates its recommendations and guidelines through publications in major scientific journals, which are easily accessible to the stroke community. It also provides resources, such as detailed protocols for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of acute stroke, to hospitals and other healthcare organizations.
As of 2008, The BAC is headed by Dr. Michael D. Walker, a former director of stroke, trauma and neurodegenerative disorders at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
The following organizations are members of the BAC:
- American Academy of Neurology
- American Association of Neurological Surgeons
