Definition: Abulia is defined as the lack of motivation or desire to perform a task. In stroke, abulia results most often from damage to the frontal lobes. An example of abulia is when a stroke survivor fails to move an arm or a leg, even though the part of the brain required to carry out the movement is intact.

Dementing illness, head trauma, and drug withdrawal can also cause abulia.
