Vascular Surgery

Definition: The type of surgery that is performed when a person develops certain problems with the vascular system (arteries and veins that transport blood). Common problems dealt with by vascular surgeons include the repair of damaged nicked arteries and veins, the reopening of clogged arteries, and the placement of different types of bypasses around blocked arteries.
Examples:
Vascular neurosurgeons and heart surgeons are vascular surgeons with special training in the repair of blood vessels in the brain, and the heart, respectively.
