What is a Risk Factor?

A risk factor is a medical condition or a behavior which increases the chances that a person will be afflicted by a particular disease. For instance, smoking is a risk factor for lung cancer, because people who smoke are more likely to suffer from lung cancer than those who do not smoke. Therefore, stroke risk factors are those medical conditions or behaviors which can lead to stroke.
