Increased Risk of Infections After Stroke
In the few days that follow a stroke, people are susceptible to various infections, especially those that cause pneumonia. The reason for this is commonly thought to be difficulty swallowing, which can lead to bacteria accidentally going into the lungs.
But a few studies indicate that when the nervous system is affected by an injury, such as that produced by a stroke, the immune system is hit in a way which does not allow it to fight infection effectively. This has been shown by several animal models of both stroke, and spinal cord injury. These findings raise the question of whether an intact nervous system is required for proper immune function.
