Job Loss and Stroke Risk

Friday February 27, 2009
As you probably know by now, a stressful event such as losing your job can have a negative impact on your health. And one question in the minds of many these days is whether job loss might have an impact in their stroke risk. Thankfully, it appears that this is not the case, based on data from one study out of Sweden.

The study investigated people who had lost their job due to institutional closures between the 1987 and 1988 in Sweden. People were followed for a period of 12 years. The authors found that although hospitalizations due to alcoholism, self harm and traffic accidents did increase due to job loss, that was not the case for stroke or heart attacks.
